  1. Just came across your decription of your time at our place- it was really lovely to read of the pleasure we gave you- and so many others. But, as you may or may not no, we have closed for a while to have a break from the constant volume of people in our family home-and I am teaching social studies at Akaroa Area School. If you are down on the ice over the winter you will probably know Yohan- from USA- a regular visitor with us- say hi to him and tell him to come and stay sometime. And if you are ever around Akaroa- c=wander up to the school and tell my class a great Antartic story! Thanks for the post. And we will be open again someday soon!Garry

  2. Oh Garry, I am so sorry to hear you shut down. I was planning on visiting Banks again this year. I may just wander by the school if I’m around during the school year.

I’m not sure I know which Johan you mean. There have been a few.

    Keep well,
    Genevieve

  3. Coldwish,

I’m a “Rusty” redhead – actually more gray than red these days from the 1984-1985 Pole winter-over crew at the old dome station. We were part of the team that implemented the South Pole Satellite Data Link (SPSDL) leading to the first e-mails from the pole and now I see blogs too. From reading about your experiences I see that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Congratulations on successfully wintering-over and have a great time in New Zealand. Just a little over three more weeks until the annual opening flight!!!

    • Actually, the opening flight was supposed to be today, and it boomeranged. Thank you for commenting here, it’s always fascinating to hear how things have changed since years before at Pole.

  4. Genevieve –

Reading your blog posts is inspiring! An odd word to use, perhaps, given what sounds like such a lifestyle of adverse conditions.

I aspire to work down there someday. I’m glad to hear the people sound so human.

    Alex

    • Alex,

Inspiring is a lovely word to use re: my blog, and I’m very flattered. I do hope you get the chance to work down here someday.

And really, we are all too human. We re not Shackletonian adventurers at all. But human.

      Cheers,
      Genevieve

  5. Hi, Genevieve–

We want to write about you for the spring MHC alumnae magazine! Game? If so, we’ll do it by email. Let me know a good address. All best. –Mieke

    • Sure. My email is over on the contact me page of this blog, slightly coded so I don’t get spammed too much.

  6. How would someone apply to work there?

    • Kiss a lot of ass, suck up, lie on your resume and sleep with the right people?

Right now, I dunno. The NSF haven’t even chosen the new contractor who will take over April 1, 2011. Raytheon could go through all the paperwork of hiring you but then you’d be all SOL after that.

Try the Antarctic Memories forum, they’ll be more up on it as news breaks.

  8. Dear Genevieve:
I saw your artical in the Alumnae Quarterly and reconized your eyes right off. As you recall from editing so many of my papers, that I have Dyslexia. I could not reminber your name, nore could I prononce the one in the artical, but your loving heart still shows through your eyes and I knew it was you. It took about a whole minet for me to read around the artical and look at your name to get your name again.
